Floating Foods

In our current world of AI and computer generated images I really want to spend some time capturing images in the studio that could only be done practically. To build a rig, to build a set, to create a scene, to find that perfect moment.

We did a full day of testing before shooting anything just to see how different objects launched. Some foods wanted to stick to the plate. some liquids refused to leave their cups. How much power does it take to levitate a bowl of miso soup?

For the stylists it was a challenge to arrange props and food on the surface based on hypotheses of where it would be in space at a given moment in time. Nissa Quanstrom did a fantastic job on the props and her sense of color is always amazing. Amanda Anselmino did a wonderful job imagining a world in motion for the food and bringing it to life.

Here’s some behind the scenes footage from the shoot. We found the high speed video on our iPhones to be very handy in determining if we need to adjust the moment of capture forward or backwards to hit the perfect moment. Simply adding a tiny bit or removing a tiny bit of weight would change the timing of the apex of the shot.
